Pigmentation
Pigmentation refers to uneven skin tone or dark spots caused by an excess of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. It can appear as freckles, sunspots, or larger patches of uneven tone. While common, pigmentation often leaves people feeling self-conscious or frustrated by makeup that doesn’t quite cover it.
Our Skin Specialists take a science-led approach to pigmentation, helping you understand what’s happening beneath the surface and how to safely and effectively restore balance, clarity, and confidence.
What causes pigmentation?
Pigmentation can develop for many reasons, and it often takes time to appear. Understanding what triggers it is key to achieving lasting improvement.
Common causes include:
- Sun exposure, aka the leading cause of pigmentation and age spots
- Hormonal changes such as during pregnancy, when taking contraception, or during menopause
- Acne or injury to the skin
- Genetic predisposition leaves some skin types more prone to pigment changes
- Environmental stressors such as UV, pollution, or heat that cause deeper damage
Our clinicians look beyond the surface to understand your specific type of pigmentation, so we can tailor a plan that delivers visible, even-toned results safely and effectively.
Types of pigmentation
- Melasma: Hormonal pigmentation that appears as symmetrical patches on the cheeks, forehead, or upper lip.
- Sun damage (solar lentigines): Flat brown spots caused by long-term UV exposure.
- Freckles: The most common form of pigmentation. Small brown spots that often become more prominent with sun exposure.
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH): Dark marks following acne or skin injury to the skin.
